We pick up cleaning products at the grocery store like it’s no big deal. Sometimes you may forget what ingredients are used in many cleaning products. It’s important to know a few safety procedures when dealing with these chemicals in your household, especially if you have children or pets.
Tips
- Before using a cleaning product, it’s very important to read the label. It will tell you pretty much all the information you need to know. It will tell you the proper directions, a list of materials used to make the product, correct safety protocols in case of emergencies, and other useful information.
- Only use the cleaning product as directed. Some chemicals when mixed with other chemicals are very dangerous, and can be deadly.
- Never mix bleach and ammonia together. When bleach is decomposed it will turn into hydrochloric acid and then subsequently, will react with the ammonia to create lethal chloramine fumes.
- Never mix bleach and vinegar. You don’t ever want to mix bleach with any kind of acid, this will create poisonous chlorine vapors. Also, don’t mix bleach with any kind of acid toilet bowl cleaner.
- Highly Acidic products mixed with highly alkaline products. When you mix different acids and bases they can react aggressively, and if splashed onto skin can result in chemical burns.
- To better reduce the likelihood of exposure of harsh chemicals to your children and pets, opt for cleaning when it will not be busy in the area you need to clean. Good times to clean are when kids are at school, asleep or napping. Never forget to put away the cleaning agent you used, even if pets or children are not around. This will greatly reduce any unexpected accidents.
- Only use the amount that is specified on the directions, and keep the caps and spouts closed tightly.
- Never ever store cleaning products with food, and always keep them in their original packaging, or containers.
- Your cleaning supply cabinet or closet should be locked if you have young children. Also, it’s beneficial to post the national toll-free poison control hotline (1-800-222-1222). Whenever you call this phone number it will automatically connect you to the poison center that is in your area. This hotline is available 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week.
- Dispose of your empty cleaning containers carefully. It’s always best to finish the entire solution, and follow the disposal directions on the back of the label.
