Removing Oil-based Makeup:

We all know that make-up can difficult to remove from most fabrics and carpet. Although, there are many different ways in which this process can be done, most do not work very well. The difference is understanding what the products are made from. Then you can derive a solution that will work. Obviously, oil based make-up is exactly that…oil based, and will require some type of solvent to remedy the issue. But, with any solvent they must be used properly or they can do more harm than good. Also, when cleaning different types of stains there is a treatment and rinse process. Many people make the mistake of cleaning the stain and leave the chemical residue behind for everyone to enjoy. Not Good! The spot must be rinsed for several reasons, which are odor, potential fading or carpet damage. So be careful. Here are some tips on removing oil-based make-up from carpet.

Things you will need:

  1. Acetone Fingernail Polish Remover
  2. Dropper
  3. 5 Gallon Bucket
  4. White Cloths (2)
  5. Toothbrush
  6. Wet/dry Vacuum

Here are the steps to remove oil-based make-up from carpet.

  1. Never rub the stain! Blot! Use the white cloth to remove as much of the make-up as possible, warm water works best! Continue this process until the color is completely gone from the towel (no more residue). If not, the make-up could run and bury deeper into the carpet fiber or backing.
  2. Fill the bucket with 3 gallons warm water (for later). With the dropper, apply 2-3 drops (depends on size of the stain) of fingernail polish remover to the stain. You will see the stain begin to lighten and run…blot with white cloth immediately! This will remove the majority of the stain. Continue this process until the make-up color is gone from blotting. If not, use the toothbrush to agitate (lightly) in a circular motion. Rubbing too hard can cause fiber damage. This will also lighten the stain, blot again with the white cloth until the color is gone.
  3. At this point, the color should be gone from the carpet fibers. If not, continue the cleaning process until the stain is removed completely. Now it’s time to rinse the carpet. You will need the 5 gallon bucket, wet dry vacuum and new white cloth. Pour 3-4 ounces of warm water onto the stain and vacuum up immediately with the wet/dry vacuum. Continue this process until the acetone odor is removed. When the odor is removed, the residue is more than likely gone. Blot dry with the white cloth. Continue the process until desired results are achieved.
