Upholstery is an important part of our daily lifestyle. We sit on it, drive to the store to look at it, spend money on it, and live part of our lives on it! So, why not take care of it! Like any other investment, upholstery should be taken care of so it looks good and lasts longer.

Here we will discuss your options on maintaining and cleaning your fine upholstery. There are several things you can do to keep your upholstery looking new. First, you can protect it by NOT eating, drinking or putting your dirty feet on the sofa or chair. The majority of the stained areas are from juice, coffee and tea. These are the main issues that upholstery cleaning companies deal with! Also, upholstery is no different than most fabrics…it can fade! Keeping your upholstery out of the sunlight will help preserve the durability and color of the fabric. So, using some common sense can save you time and money.

You probably already have some of these issues. So, here are some things you can do to help remedy the problem. For any fading issues you can move your furniture out of the sunlight. Pretty simple! Cleaning your upholstery is more difficult than it would seem! The reason is because many fabrics are made, colored and chemically treated in different ways. So, the cleaning process must be specific to the type of fabric. Before you start to clean your upholstery check with manufacturer and see if they recommend any cleaners for your upholstery. If not, you can look on the tag to see if there are any recommendations on cleaning solutions and how to clean the upholstery. Neither one of these may be available to you. So, do your homework as thoroughly as possible! It can save you some money and valued furniture. If your determined to remove the stains then water and a mild soap are a pretty safe bet! But, be careful because some fabrics can bleed or run. You can test the fabric underneath the chair or sofa to make sure these issues do not occur. Once you have determined that the fabric is safe to clean then you can start the process.

1. Pour the recommended cleaning solution into a spray bottle.
2. Spray the solution onto the stain
3. Blot the stain or agitate lightly with a white cloth (do not use a colored cloth or rub too hard)
4. The white towel will turn the color of the stain if the process is working
5. Let the spot air dry! (do not use blow dryers)

This process works well! But, be patient for the results. Rushing the process will result in damaged fabric. Cleaning your upholstery from dust is another important part of keeping your furniture in top shape. The best way to remove dust is to vacuum it up. Most vacuum cleaners are equipped with special upholstery attachments to clean your furniture. When vacuuming your upholstery be careful not to snag the fabric. Brush the cleaning tools over the fabric gently. Clean until all the dust is removed. The sofa cushions can be removed and taken outside to clean. You can anything that will not damage the fabric to remove the dust. It’s also recommended that you flip the sofa or chair cushions on occasion. This will help prevent the cushion from looking too worn and protect the shape. If these steps are followed correctly, your furniture will look beautiful and last much longer.
