When it comes to Spring Cleaning, you’ve probably heard it all. You already know to dust under all your knick-knacks and to rearrange your closet when you rotate your wardrobe. You’ve probably also read the latest spring cleaning hacks.
What you probably haven’t heard though are spring cleaning tips for dog owners, like you! When you have a dog, you have to clean up messes that are on a whole ‘nother level, so you need unique tips that are going to cater to your specific needs.
So, without further ado, here are the spring cleaning tips you’ve been waiting for:
Clean your walls with Magic Erasers
We know that you’re aware of the dangers posed to your carpet and upholstery when you have a dog, but did you know your pup is also dirtying your walls? Lots of dogs like to curl up in close quarters; they usually achieve that snug comfortability by laying down next to a wall. Over time, your dog can leave behind markings.
It happens so gradually that you might not even notice it at all first–but you’ll certainly notice a difference after your walls have been cleaned!
You can use a lot of different things to clean your walls, depending on the texture, such as a washcloth, a sponge or Clorox or Lysol wipes. However, we recommend using Mr. Clean’s Magic Erasers. Just follow the directions and–voila!–your walls will be spotless!
Wash your dog!
The dirtier your dog is, the more likely it is that they will make your home dirty, too. Wash your dog outside with your garden hose to avoid making a mess indoors.
If you live in an apartment or a duplex and don’t have a yard, you can wash your dog in your bathtub. Here are a few bathtime tricks to keep in mind:
-
Brush your dog beforehand to avoid clogging your drain.
-
Wear an old bathing suit and prepare to get wet!
-
Have a towel ready so you can dry your dog right after the bath.
-
If you have a detachable shower head, this can be a great tool to use!
-
After the bath, brush your dog again to remove any excess hair that could cling to your furniture.
-
Wipe down your tub with a towel.
-
Pro tip: Use a lemon to clean soap scum off of the faucet and the handle.
-
Pro tip: Use a dryer sheet to wipe remaining soap scum off any glass surrounding the tub.
Test store-bought fabric cleaners on a small piece of upholstery
Cleaning your upholstery is a must when you have a dog–even if you don’t allow him/her on the furniture! When they lay at your feet, their bodies can rub against your chairs, loveseats and sofas, causing a similar problem to the one you experience with your walls.
However, you have to be careful when cleaning your own furniture. Your different furniture pieces are probably made with a myriad of fabrics, all of which may need to be cleaned differently.
Always read customer reviews carefully before purchasing a store-bought upholstery cleaner, making sure to note how the solution reacted to different fabrics. Once you have purchased a product, test it on a small patch of fabric before using all of it on any stains. It’s best to do your testing under the cushions or behind your couch–or, really, any place your guests won’t be able to see if things go wrong. Only when you’re comfortable with the reaction should you begin cleaning your upholstery.
Then again, you could always play it safe and have a professional come clean your upholstery for you!
Use a shower squeegee to remove pet hair from your carpet
This tip is ingenious in its simplicity. Really, all you have to do is take a clean, preferably new squeegee and run it along the surface of your carpet in the exact same way you would if you were using it on glass or tile. If any of your dog’s hair has gotten meshed into the carpet fibers over time, you’ll see large portions of those remains come up after using the squeegee.
This step is time-consuming, but it’s definitely worth it! (And it’s a great arm workout, too!)
Have your carpet professionally cleaned
If your dog had any accidents in your home, it’s best to call a professional carpet cleaning service that specializes in Pet Urine and Odor Remediation, like Aqualux Carpet Cleaning. We use steam-cleaning to effectively extract stains from your carpet and remove harmful chemicals left over from pet urine, like ammonia, out of the carpet padding.
Bonus Tip: You can protect your future (and your freshly cleaned carpet!) after a carpet cleaning with wax paper. Just cut small square out of wax paper and place them under the legs of your furniture. This will keep any left over dirt or germs from infecting your carpet and will keep moist carpet from damaging your furniture.
