Removing stains from your carpet can be a harrowing process for homeowners who work outside the carpet cleaning industry. It takes time, energy and “elbow grease” to clean your carpet and, even then, it’s unlikely that you’ll make much progress without a Hot Water Extraction machine. The best way to protect your carpet from stains is by taking preventative measures. Here are a few ways you can stop dirt in its tracks:
Manicure Your Lawn
In last week’s article, we explored how much having a well-manicured lawn can influence the cleanliness of your carpet. Over-watering your lawn can create a constantly muddy consistency below the grassy surface, making it more likely that you’ll smear mud into your carpet. Alternatively, under-watering can create bare patches in your lawn, increasing the chances of tracking dirt into your home. Taking the time to care for your lawn can greatly reduce the time and energy you employ trying to clean stains out of your carpet.
Leave Shoes at the Door
During the day, you walk around many buildings where it would be inappropriate to go barefoot: Your office, restaurants, public restrooms and more. It might be second nature to walk into your home with your shoes on, but leaving your shoes in your foyer can keep dirt and bacteria from tracking into your home. Set up a small shelf or a decorative basket at your front door to avoid clutter or tripping hazards. You may also want to consider hanging up a sign as a gentle reminder for your guests.
Drink from Containers with Lids
If you’re drinking over a carpeted area, it’s best to limit yourself to drinks that have secure lids. That way if you accidentally knock your drink over, you don’t have to worry about spilling on your carpet. Just remember to promptly replace the lid after each sip.
Leave Food and Drinks in the Dining Room
Drinking out of a lidded container isn’t a fool-proof way to keep drink spills and food contamination from staining your carpet. The best way to avoid these issues is by abstaining from eating or drinking in carpeted areas altogether.
Decorate with Rugs
Protect a large area of your carpet by laying down rugs in rooms with high traffic. Rugs can bring a nice splash of color into any room and change the atmosphere for the better. What’s more, they are much easier to clean than carpet because they do not have padding for spills (in particular) to seep into. Remember though, in the event of a spill, to check the carpet underneath the rug. Liquid may saturate the rug and leak to the surface of the carpet underneath in severe cases, although, if this happens, the spill is less likely to pass through the rug, the carpet surface and then down into the padding.
Wipe Your Puppy’s Paws
When your dogs or other outside pets come in from your backyard, the last thing they’re thinking about is keeping dirt off your carpet. When you bring your pets in, tell them to “sit” next to the back door. Ask them to “shake,” prompting them to lift a paw toward you, and then catch it and clean it using an old towel or washcloth. Perform these steps with each paw until you know they are clean.
