Understanding dust mites and how to control them is a process. Dust Mites are microscopic bugs that live in your home and feed off human and pet dander (dead skin cells that are in your home). They like warm tight spaces and are typically found in furniture, beds and linens. These skin cells are pretty much everywhere. Most of the dust in your house is actually dead skin cells. They mostly contaminate places where you spend the most time. Such as your bedroom (your bed and bed sheets), carpet, bath towels etc… So, there are many areas where Dust Mites can live and breed. These pesky bugs are not healthy, especially for people with allergies. They can cause sneezing, runny nose, congestion and a scratchy throat. Sometimes these allergies lead to other health issues. Dust Mites also can cause wheezing for people with Asthma. So taking control of these pesky creatures is better for the overall health of you and your home.
In order to control them, a good cleaning regiment is the best way.
First, contacting a carpet cleaning company that cleans upholstery is a good step. A professional company can clean and deodorize your bed mattresses and furniture to get rid of these bugs. Also, there are carpet cleaning companies that use special solutions to remove harmful bacteria that these dust mites feed on.
Second, be sure to clean your home thoroughly (wash bed sheets, towels, clothing, etc) in hot water with bleach and dry cleaned, this will guarantee that all mites are removed. Remember that heat will kill mites (the more intense the better). Do not use anything that may cause a fire.
Finally, clean your home with some type of anti-bacterial household disinfectant to remove any food source for the dust mites. Be sure to remove all dirty air filters and replace with new ones. Having your air ducts cleaned is recommended as well. At this point, your dust mite issue should be much better if not removed. This process to remove the mites takes time and some money to do properly! Be sure to keep your carpet and furniture clean to prevent the issue from happening again. A good way to prevent dust mites is to vacuum your carpet and furniture regularly and replace your vacuum bags often!
Other tips:
Use encasings for your mattress, preferably with plastic wrappings. Then add your covers on top of this. Use an air purifier to help reduce dust. These steps can make a big difference in your home.
