Olefin carpet is a commonly picked choice in many American homes. A good amount of Berbers contain a high amount of Olefin carpet fibers. Olefin carpet has both negative and positive attributes, like many other carpets. In reality, there is not “one perfect carpet”; each has qualities that may be suited more to your needs. Every household is different; the key is to figure out what are the main aspects you would like your carpet to have.

Positive Aspects

Olefin carpet is great for families with young kids, because Olefin is naturally stain resistant. A majority of water-based spills have virtually no effect on Olefin carpet fibers. Also, Olefin is very colorfast, which means you do not have to worry about the color dye in your carpet fading. Olefin carpet is pretty durable overall, and wears wells. This is extremely helpful when using cleaning products on your flooring. Certain cleaning agents typically found in carpet cleaning solutions you can purchase at the grocery store, can bleach and damage your carpet fibers.  Olefin is a great choice for outdoor carpet use (pool areas), because of how moisture resistant it is. This type of carpet is also very light-weight; it is one of the few carpets that can float on water.

Negative Aspects

                Although Olefin has a good amount of pros, there are also some negative qualities to consider. While, Olefin is stain resistant to water-based spills, it is very difficult to remove oil-based stains. Many oil-based soils can quickly become permanent. Also, if you are dragging heavy furniture across Olefin, it can easily be damaged by friction. Olefin is not very resilient fiber; it is hard for this fiber to regain its original structure. This type of carpet is also very heat sensitive as well. Its melting point is approximately around 300 degrees, but it’s common for damage to occur at lower temperatures.

Therefore, remember when picking out a carpet make sure you do your research! You want to pick the carpet that is best fitted for you and your family, not just the one that is more aesthetically pleasing.
